PWM LED STRIP Light

PWM LED strips are currently the most common type on the market and offer the best dimming experience. Their core feature is controlling brightness through rapid switching rather than lowering voltage. The following breaks down everything from principles to actual experience:

1. What is a PWM LED Strip?

PWM = Pulse Width Modulation

Simply put: the LED isn't actually "dimmed"; instead, it switches rapidly between fully on and fully off. Because the switching frequency is very high (usually hundreds of Hz to several kHz), the human eye perceives it as simply being "dimmer."

The Duty Cycle determines the brightness:

  • 100% Duty Cycle → Always on → Maximum brightness

  • 50% Duty Cycle → On half the time, off half the time → Medium brightness

  • 10% Duty Cycle → Off most of the time → Very dim

2. Main Features of PWM LED Strips

1. Extremely Wide Brightness Adjustment Range

  • Can smoothly transition from nearly completely off to full brightness.

  • Compared to analog dimming (via voltage reduction), it remains stable at low brightness levels without flickering or color shifting.

2. Accurate Color & High Consistency (Especially important for RGB / RGBW)

  • At any brightness level, the LED operates near its designed current.

  • Therefore, the color temperature and hue remain almost unchanged regardless of brightness.

  • For RGB strips: lowering the brightness does not cause the "washed out" or "pale" color effect.

3. High Efficiency & Low Heat Generation

  • The LED is either fully on or fully off, avoiding inefficient "partial conduction" states.

  • Compared to linear voltage-dimming, there is less energy waste, keeping both the strip and the driver cooler.
