External IC LED Strip

External IC Addressable LED Strip Types

External IC (also called discrete driver IC) refers to addressable LED strips where the control chip is soldered separately on the PCB, driving standard RGB or RGBW LED packages. This is different from built‑in ICstrips (e.g., WS2812B, SK6812), where the driver is integrated inside the LED package.

External‑IC strips are commonly used in 12 V / 24 V systems and typically follow a 1 IC : 3 LED, 1 IC : 6 LED, or 1 IC : 12 LED grouping ratio.

1. Single‑Wire Return‑to‑Zero Code (Single‑Wire SPI / TTL)

The most common type. Only 3 wires are required: VCC, DIN, GND.

The IC receives a serial data stream and forwards it to the next pixel.

Characteristics: Simple wiring, but if one IC fails, downstream pixels may lose signal.

2. Dual‑Wire with Backup Data (Breakpoint Continuation)

Based on single‑wire protocol but adds a BI / Backup line. If a pixel is damaged, the signal can bypass it and continue to the next pixel.
