A single DMX universe contains a maximum of 512 DMX channels (addresses 1–512).
Each channel carries a value from 0 to 255 (256 steps), which controls one parameter—typically one color, one intensity level, or one function.
📌 1 DMX universe = 512 channels maximum
The key is knowing how many channels each fixture or pixel consumes.
The most common setup is a single-pixel RGB fixture—for example, one addressable LED pixel on a DMX512 strip.
Red = 1 channel
Green = 1 channel
Blue = 1 channel
That’s 3 channels per pixel to mix any color in the visible spectrum.

🧮 Maximum RGB pixels per DMX universe = 170 pixels (170 × 3 = 510 channels, leaving 2 spare)
Different LED configurations need more channels per pixel:
|
LED Type |

Max Pixels per Universe |
|---|---|---|

Single Color |
1 (dimmer only) |
512 pixels |

|
RGBW |
4 (R + G + B + W) |
128 pixels |
|
RGBCCT |
5 (R + G + B + WW + CW) |
102 pixels |
So if you’re using RGBW DMX512 LED strips (with UCS512C4 or similar ICs), each pixel takes 4 channels → only 128 pixels fit in one universe.
Some DMX fixtures contain multiple pixels in one physical housing. For example:
A 12-pixel RGB LED bar = 12 × 3 = 36 DMX channels
A 6-pixel RGBW wall washer = 6 × 4 = 24 DMX channels
Always multiply pixels per fixture × channels per pixel to get the true channel count.
Follow this simple formula:
Total DMX Channels = Number of Pixels × Channels per Pixel
Then divide by 512 to find how many DMX universes you need:
Universes Needed = Total Channels ÷ 512 (round up)
300 pixels × 3 channels = 900 channels
900 ÷ 512 = 1.76 → 2 universes
500 pixels × 4 channels = 2,000 channels
2,000 ÷ 512 = 3.9 → 4 universes
Controller selection — small DMX interfaces handle 1–2 universes; large projects need Art-Net, sACN, or multi-universe nodes
Addressing — each pixel must have a unique start address; overlapping addresses cause chaos
Software setup — MADRIX, MadMapper, Resolume, and consoles all need correct universe/channel mapping
Cable & topology — more universes = more data lines or network distribution
✅ Leave headroom — don’t pack 512 channels exactly; leave a few free for future expansion
✅ Group fixtures logically — assign fixtures to universes by zone (e.g., Universe 1 = stage left, Universe 2 = stage right)
✅ Use wide-mode ICs — some DMX ICs support 8-bit or 16-bit mode; 16-bit doubles channel count per color
✅ Check IC datasheets — TM512AC, UCS512B3, SM18512, etc., may have different default channel mappings

How to calculate? |
Pixels × channels per pixel = total channels |
Calculating DMX channels is simple math once you know the formula: pixels × channels per pixel. For a standard RGB DMX512 LED strip, each pixel uses 3 channels, meaning you can control up to 170 pixels per universe. For RGBW or RGBCCT, the number drops accordingly.
Plan your channel count early, choose a controller with enough universe capacity, and your installation will run smoothly from day one.
